When she started out, one of my mentors was asked to give a talk to a group of alcoholics. She rang her mentor in a panic, saying she knew nothing about alcoholism. 'No', he said, 'but they do. They don't need to know anything more about being an alcoholic; they need help understanding how not to be.' As you say, you don't need to know what they feel to help someone.
